Why DDoS Protection Via an ISP Is the Sensible Choice for Many Organizations

Any organization that relies on the Internet to conduct business can potentially be victimized by Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The question is not whether such organizations should get some form of DDoS protection, but which DDoS solution is right for them. For many organizations that do not have in-house resources to manage DDoS hardware and software, the sensible choice is to get DDoS protection as a cloud service.  And, getting that service from their Internet Service Provider is an increasingly popular option, because it’s easy, affordable, and reliable. This is particularly true for smaller organizations that typically have very limited IT resources.

Customers Save Time and Money, Increase Efficiency and Effectivity

The benefits in terms of efficiency and effectivity can be substantial. Depending on which type of DDoS mitigation solution they use, ISPs can even offer their customers real-time visibility into the DDoS traffic that is targeting their network, via individual customer portal views, so they know what traffic was blocked and why. They also benefit from greater data security because they don’t have to worry about redirecting some of their traffic via a third-party cloud-based scrubbing center. Sending traffic to scrubbing centers is often costly, adds latency, and can still result in downtime. There is also a financial advantage to DDoS protection as a service as it typically operates on a “pay as you go” business model, which means that organizations pay out of their operating budget (OPEX) rather than an upfront investment out of their capital expenditures (CAPEX) budget.

By having best-in-class, intelligently automated DDoS protection as a service from their ISP, organizations can reduce costs, improve their network security, protect their data, eliminate the risk of downtime, have more time to tackle other cybersecurity threats, and more time to focus on their core business.

ISPs Increase Customer Satisfaction and Retention

Not all ISPs offer DDoS protection as a service, but in the past few years, many have begun doing so. Why? Because their customers are now insisting on secure and uninterrupted connectivity, and DDoS attacks are a major threat to that. DDoS attacks are increasing in frequency and sophistication, and organizations are realizing they need protection more than ever before.

ISPs are highly motivated to retain their existing customers, and one way to do that is to ensure uptime for those customers. DDoS protection offers a value-add advantage in a highly competitive ISP marketplace. Furthermore, DDoS is a threat to every ISP’s service level agreement (SLAs) for uptime and availability. When ISPs offer optimal DDoS protection, they save money by more easily meeting those SLA agreements.

ISPs are in an ideal position to block DDoS traffic, before it can enter any of their customers’ networks. Always-on protection wherever an ISP’s network touches the public Internet maximizes security and operational effectiveness.
