Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Corero SmartWall ONE?

Corero SmartWall ONE is the next step in the evolution of our SmartWall DDoS protection technology. The main takeaways from today’s announcement are:

  • Native integration with Juniper MX and PTX routers
  • 100G virtual appliances
  • Advanced protections updates

We’ve also simplified our product naming (no need to remember TLAs), and more importantly, all of the SmartWall components run on a unified code base making SmartWall ONE a modular, platform-based solution.

Q: What is important about native integration with Juniper routers?

You may already know that we’ve had this integration capability for some time now. What’s new is that this functionality is included in our network edge mitigation (formerly ETD/TDD) along with our other existing integration capabilities with all top edge routers from Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Nokia, and more.

If you’re not already familiar, these integrations effectively turn your edge routers in DDoS protection sensors. The way that it works, in a nutshell, is the routers constantly feed us packet samples. As soon as DDoS behavior is detected, we automatically configure the router using FlowSpec, Netconf, or any number of standards in order to block the unwanted traffic.

Q: What is the significance of the 100G virtual appliance and who would use it?

We’ve made it a point to ensure that all of our appliances are available as hardware and software. The whole idea is that you can deploy what you need based on your requirements, rather than have a vendor dictate what your options are. With our release of 100G virtual appliances, we’ve made sure that you can get the protection you need in the form factor you want and at the speed you want.

We see the need for this appliance primarily being used for traffic scrubbing.

Q: Tell me more about the advanced protection updates

Our research team is constantly monitoring and analyzing DDoS activities and trends. The results end up in updated protections. These updates include ways to help defend against advanced attacks such DNS infrastructure attacks and other advanced TCP-based attacks, such as those discussed in our 2023 DDoS Threat Intelligence Report.
