Chapter 4: Don’t Tolerate Less Than Real Time – Blog Series: Mitigating Risk on the Digital Transformation Journey

This blog is the fourth in our series of four articles emphasizing the need for businesses to implement ‘Always-on in Real-time’ DDoS security solutions.

In the first three blogs of this series, we introduced the value and risks of digital transformation, increased connectivity via Network Effects, and the impact of DDoS on individuals and businesses. All the topics covered so far discuss the many risks introduced due to the complexity and speed that cybercriminals execute their attacks with the intention to minimize the performance, accessibility and connectivity benefits expected by the targeted organization. We now focus on why your organization and your market expect you to protect your capability with always-on, real-time protection.

Will you tolerate less than real-time?

Many of us live in a culture of increasingly real-time expectations. This is acutely evident from our business and social interactions. More than ever, we expect speed, convenience, and accessibility. The trouble is, that service providers must keep up if they are going to survive but businesses can find themselves tripping up to deliver what other’s technology advancements have promoted and (seemingly) promised to their users.  These learned experiences and behaviors (speed, convenience, accessibility) are continually recognized as having changed our (user perspective) attitudes of acceptance. We are now firmly living and working in a state of “I want / need it now” demand.

Consumers use their smartphones to access digital applications via a communications provider to make a purchase, a banking transaction, or update their credentials – with expectations for instant responses and high performance. A poorly performing application or unreachable site is measured by a consumer in those all-important first few seconds (not minutes or hours).

Employees use their company devices on a business network to engage with other employees, consumers and business partners to exchange messages, place orders, or access financial and other confidential data, every second of the day. Delays in response times can damages the customer experience for the timely receipt of orders, the most up to date information, and accessibility.

Organizations use computer systems and applications across global networks to deliver the instantaneous performance and actions needed for medical devices, stock trades, supply chains and inter-bank transfers. The negative effects when these global networks are not immediately available can be financially and physically devastating.

Each of these actions may appear to be singular by the user, but are delivered by the service providers to thousands, if not millions, of users every second of the day. The impact of a delay to a single consumer, is simultaneously being felt by every other user of the network.  No longer is the impact singular, it is exponentially multiplied.

  • A telecoms network outage stops communications for every one of the millions of subscribers
  • A business network outage makes every employee unproductive
  • A banking network outage prevents access to funds for every account holder
  • A social media application outage stops every member from updating their status

If the delivery of these everyday services is deemed as necessities in our digitally accepted ‘always-on in real-time’ world, then why are the providers behind the delivery of these services not implementing effective Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation offerings that can maintain network capabilities to match these consumer expectations?

DDoS attacks come in many guises. They are short, long, large and small, impacting every layer of the connective tissue (network) that we all rely on. True ‘always-on in real-time’ DDoS mitigation should never be determined by the type of attack, attack vector, size of network, or cost. It should be ever-present as a minimum requirement.

The integration of cybersecurity, including DDoS mitigation solutions, should always be a critical component of an organization’s enterprise risk management processes. Ensuring that any known or perceived risk is minimized, by protecting the technologies that are transforming our behaviors and expectations of an ‘always on in real-time’ experience, will result in the correct balance of value and risk.

Always-On in Real-Time

This is the era where the need for real-time protection is rising. These supposed ‘always-on’ DDoS security offerings may be awake, but are they delivering the ‘real-time’ mitigation response in case of an attack?

You may already have a DDoS solution in place. That’s great and should provide some comfort to stretched CISOs. While there are many DDoS offerings available it is increasingly essential to have real-time response mitigation response processes.

  • When was the last time you considered the impact of a delay in protection processes when subjected to a DDoS attack?
  • Is your protection delivered via a scrubbing service that needs to redirect traffic to its cloud before it can even begin to mitigate your DDoS attacks?
  • Or, an on-premises service that will incur significant delays detecting and then redirecting affected traffic to an internal, out-of-band, scrubbing center?
