Lizard Squad retaliates against the UK's National Crime Agency following arrests of "customers"

Lizard Squad just can't leave it alone.

Last week we reported that the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the United Kingdom arrested a number of teenagers who used Lizard Squad's DDoS tool Lizard Stresser. (See Users of DDoS-as-a-Service are arrested in the UK.)

Just days after those arrests, the NCA's website was attacked and briefly taken down by Lizard Squad. The hacker group tweeted its logo on Tuesday morning with the caption ‘Stressed out?' alongside a link to the NCA website, which was offline at that time.

Far from being stressed out, the NCA issued a statement regarding the attack:

DDoS is a blunt form of attack which takes volume and not skill. It isn't a security breach, and it doesn't affect our operational capability. At worst it is a temporary inconvenience to users of our website. We have a duty to balance the value of keeping our website accessible with the cost of doing so, especially in the face of a threat which can scale up endlessly. The measures we have in place at present mean that our site is generally up and running again within 30 minutes, though occasionally it can take longer. We think that's proportionate.

The National Crime Agency has a cyber crime unit whose responsibilities include pursuing those who utilize the Internet for criminal means. This unit has the capabilities and critical partnerships to work at both the national and international levels.

In terms of cyber crime, what Lizard Squad does, and what it enables others to do, is not very significant. This group is probably like an annoying  little mosquito buzzing around the heads of the professionals in the NCA's National Cyber Crime Unit. But if they get the chance to swat the punks of Lizard Squad, they probably won't be as lenient as they were with the teenage users of Lizard Stresser. (Many of them bonded out of jail quickly and may not even be prosecuted for their actions.)
