Protection against DDoS attacks and other unwanted traffic in Higher Education

From a security perspective, colleges and universities are a need to maintain a delicate balance with the protection of sensitive information about their population, while maintaining networks and establish (or fail to establish) policies about their use. They have hundreds, sometimes thousands of employees, including academics, researchers, service personnel, physical plant workers and even police, serving a large clientele base.
At the same time, security personnel in the education sector face conundrum: They must allow, indeed, facilitate the free and open flow of ideas and information that is essential in an academic environment, while protecting sensitive personal and business records, and intellectual property.

Join Stephen Gates, Chief Security Evangelist for this educational webinar to learn how to stop the latest breed of cyber-attacks, including DDoS attacks, zero-day exploits, remote exploit insertions, server targeted threats and access attempts from malicious IP addresses and unwanted geo-locations, all of which easily bypass traditional network security defenses and compromise enterprise network.

It’s time for a new perimeter - Protecting your IT Infrastructure from malicious attacks

Enterprises increasing dependence on the Internet to conduct business is leading to an exponential surge in traffic and attack volume. This trend will continue with broad implications for the technology industry, and for network security in particular. In the face of this heightened demand traditional approaches to network security are proving ineffective.

If your organization relies on the Internet to conduct business; this makes you a target for malicious attack traffic. DDoS attacks, volumetric and application layer, can take your business down and compromise confidential information.

Join Bob Tarzey, Analyst and Director with QuoCirca as he discusses recent research relative to the various types of targeted attacks, and the impact to your business.

Session attendees will learn why traditional technologies, including firewalls, can’t protect against these aggressive and evolving attack techniques.

The financial services industry continues to be one of the biggest targets in the current cyber threat landscape. Recent research indicates that high bandwidth Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have become commonplace for these organisations and will continue wreaking havoc on unprepared Financial Institutions in 2013.* Even organisations that think they are protected through their ISP or by their firewall stand little chance against these escalating threats.

Please join a large London-based Financial Institution as they:

  • Share their experience with DDoS attacks and recount the challenges faced when protecting their network
  • Review the highly effective approach they took to combat these malicious attacks and other variants of unwanted traffic.

You will also hear from Corero CEO, Ashley Stephenson as he discusses the results behind recent third party research studies; shedding light on the evolving nature and types of DDoS attacks, and the preventative measures financial institutions need to take to defend themselves.

Defend Your Enterprise Against DDoS Attacks: A Real World Example

Despite continuous attacks and widespread publicity surrounding them, most organizations are not prepared to defend against a DDoS attack.  With the latest breed of insidious, low and slow, application-layer DDoS attacks even organizations that think they are protected through their ISP or by their firewall are at significant risk.

Join Oleg Voloshin, Chief Technology Officer with Zacks Investment Research, for a discussion of the challenges his company faces protecting their mission-critical website from attack. Zacks, a highly regarded firms in the investment industry,  must not only ensure it is available to its users but also safeguard its information to maintain customer confidence – crucial for any organization conducting business online. Oleg will discuss how Zacks was hit by a DDoS attack and the new approach they took to combat it.

You will also hear from Mike Rothman, analyst and president with Securosis, an independent research and analysis firm. As a security expert, Mike will discuss the increasing number and types of DDoS attacks and preventative measures organizations need to take to defend themselves.

HSBC®, BB&T®, Capital One®, SunTrust®, Wells Fargo®, Regions Financial®, U.S. Bancorp®, PNC Financial Services Group®, Citigroup®, Bank of America®, JP Morgan Chase®…

This is not just a list of Internet banking giants; these are just some of the companies affected by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the past month. Any information security professional who wants to hang onto their job should be totally clued up when it comes to these DDoS attacks, especially as they're easy to carry out and available to anyone with $200 or so and a grudge.

According to Gartner, DDoS attacks "are growing in frequency and severity."  In a 2011 report, Gartner cites financial and political motivations as the driving forces behind attacks but notes that whatever the motivation the outcome is the same: "damaging downtime for Internet connectivity that impacts both internal users and end customers."

Despite continuous attacks and widespread publicity surrounding them, most organizations are not prepared.  With the latest breed of insidious, low and slow, application-layer DDoS attacks even organizations that think they are protected through their ISP or by their firewall are at significant risk.

Join this educational webinar to learn critical proactive protection strategies.  You'll also see a live demonstration of an application layer DDoS attack in action.  The demo will show the attacked server and the protection that can be provided to defend against this destructive DDoS variant.
